lyrics

I saw the iceberg floating off the starboard bow
But I didn’t want to wake you so I guess we’ll all just drown
And I was on the night shift when the red phone started to ring
But I’m not one to cry wolf so I didn’t say a thing

But now I’m in a room packed with strangers wall to wall
And there’s a cloud of smoke starting to grow above us all
But there’s no sound to be heard; no movement to be seen
Eyes downcast towards the floor; nobody says a thing

No one’s yelling fire
No one wants to be the first to speak
So we’ll all burn in silent solidarity
Cause we don’t want to be alarmists
We don’t want to do anybody harm
So we’ll just sit ever so quiet on the sidelines
As we watch our last chance to save our own lives pass us by

I watched the cracks in the dam starting to grow
But only a fool would ever fear a change so slow
And I could feel the temperature of the water start to rise
But I like it warm so I think I’ll be fine

But the room is getting dark now as the smoke is thickening
Like a heavy woolen blanket hanging off of the ceiling
And we’re all struggling to breathe; hunched down on all fours
But still nobody panics: no one’s going for the door

No one’s yelling fire
No one wants to be the first to speak
So we’ll all burn in silent solidarity
Cause we don’t want to be alarmists
We don’t want to do anybody harm
So we’ll just sit ever so quiet on the sidelines
As we watch our last chance to save our own lives pass us by

And as our world began to burn
We played pretend standing silent with our backs turned

But while we still have something left
With every breath I’m screaming fire

No one wants to be the first to speak
So we’ll all burn in silent solidarity
Cause we don’t want to be alarmists
We don’t want to do anybody harm
So we’ll just sit ever so quiet on the sidelines
As we watch our last chance to save our own lives pass us by

about

Cruel Hope Toronto, Ontario

Silence is violence.

These three words, emblazoned on frontman Liam Horrigan’s guitar in red and white electrical tape, describe the essential principle underpinning Cruel Hope as a band. Self-styled as “political alt punk”, the Toronto-based power trio swept onto the Canadian music scene in early 2022 with a clear mission: to advocate for a fairer and more sustainable world through music. ... more
